Direct Cremation: What It Costs and What You Get (US and UK)

A direct cremation is a cremation with no funeral service and no viewing beforehand. It is the lowest-cost way to arrange a funeral in the US and the UK. The US median is $1,995, from 919 funeral home price lists collected in 2026 (Asurgo). The UK average is £1,628 (SunLife, 2026). UK providers' own websites showed prices from £1,095 to £1,595 when we checked on 2 November 2026.
That is often thousands less than a funeral with a service. But "direct cremation" does not mean the same thing everywhere. One price includes home collection and an urn. Another does not. This page shows what you get, what costs extra and how to compare providers fairly.
What is a direct cremation, exactly?
The funeral provider collects the person who has died and cares for them. It handles the paperwork. Then it carries out the cremation at a time it books, usually with nobody present. The ashes come back to the family, or are scattered at the crematorium.
What is left out is the formal service, the hearse, limousines, embalming and a viewing. That is where the saving comes from.
What is not left out is meaning. The family is free to say goodbye in its own way, later. SunLife found that 86% of UK families who chose direct cremation held a small gathering, wake or memorial before or after (SunLife, 2026). And 21% of UK funeral organisers described the funeral they arranged as a direct cremation.
Who is it a good fit for?
- People who want a simple, low-cost farewell.
- Families spread across countries, who need time to travel for a memorial.
- People who prefer a personal gathering to a formal service.
- Families with little money, where every hundred pounds or dollars matters.
Who may want something else?
- Families whose faith requires burial, or a funeral service with the body present.
- People who find comfort in a formal service at the crematorium.
- Anyone who wants to see the person one last time. Most direct cremation packages include no viewing.
Our cremation vs burial cost page explains the faith questions in more detail.
How much does a direct cremation cost in the US?
The median is $1,995. But the range is wide: from $575 to $6,285 across 919 price lists in 2026 (Asurgo). Where you live makes a big difference.
| State (examples) | Median direct cremation, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Nevada | $1,190 |
| Arizona | $1,240 |
| Oregon | $1,295 |
| California | $1,895 |
| Texas | $2,015 |
| Florida | $1,882 |
| New York | $1,795 |
| Pennsylvania | $2,462 |
| Connecticut | $3,020 |
| Rhode Island | $3,315 |
These are sample medians from price lists, not official state averages. Some states had few price lists, so treat them as a guide.
Your rights under the FTC Funeral Rule
US federal law gives you strong rights here (FTC).
- No casket is needed. No state or local law requires a casket for cremation.
- A simple container must be offered. A home that offers direct cremation must make an unfinished wood box or "alternative container" available. It may be made of pressboard, cardboard or canvas.
- No embalming is needed. Direct cremation needs no preservation of the body.
- Prices by phone. A funeral home must give you prices by phone if you ask. You do not have to give your name first.
- Bring your own urn. A home cannot refuse an urn you bought elsewhere, or charge you to use it.
What may cost extra in the US?
Ask about each of these before you agree.
- Certified copies of the death certificate. These are a "cash advance" item, paid to the state.
- The crematory fee, if it is not included. The FTC checklist suggests asking: "If the cremation process is extra, how much is it?" (FTC)
- An urn. Many prices include only a temporary container.
- Collection outside a set distance, or at night.
- A medical examiner's fee, in some places.
How much does a direct cremation cost in the UK?
The SunLife average is £1,628, up 1.9% on the year before (SunLife, 2026). Here is what four national providers listed on their own websites on 2 November 2026, for arranging a direct cremation now, without a plan.
| Provider | Listed at-need price | What the website says is included or extra |
|---|---|---|
| Farewill | from £1,095 | Oak veneer coffin, unattended cremation. You can collect the ashes, have them scattered, or have them hand-delivered for £100 (Farewill). |
| Distinct Cremations (Westerleigh Group) | from £1,350 | Care at its own mortuary, cremation at one of its 42 crematoriums, ashes scattered or returned within 14 days (Distinct). |
| Simplicity Cremations (Dignity) | from £1,399 | A "simple, meaningful cremation" when someone has died (Simplicity). |
| Pure Cremation | £1,595 | Solid wood coffin, cremation at its own crematoria, urn hand-delivered. A £260 charge applies if collection is from a home, not a hospital (Pure Cremation). |
We also tried to read Co-op Funeralcare's direct cremation price on its own site, but the page did not load for us. Co-op is one of the largest UK providers, so check its standard price list yourself.

Why do the prices differ so much?
Partly because the packages differ. Look at these points on each provider's standard price list:
- Collection. Is collection from a home included, or extra? Is there an out-of-hours fee?
- The coffin. Veneer or solid wood? Is a larger coffin extra?
- Medical devices. Is removing a pacemaker included?
- The ashes. Are they returned in an urn or a temporary container? Delivered, posted or collected?
- Choice of crematorium. Can you choose, or does the provider pick?
- Timing. How long until the cremation, and until the ashes come back? Pure Cremation, for example, says the cremation usually takes place 13 to 16 days from instruction.
Since 2021, every UK funeral director must show a standard price list on its website (CMA). So you can compare these points line by line.
Can family attend?
A direct cremation is normally unattended. Some providers sell a short attended option. Pure Cremation listed prices from £395 for a small room (up to 12 people) and £665 for a larger hall at its own crematoria (Pure Cremation). Simplicity's plan page describes a short gathering option too.
Is a direct cremation the right choice for your family?
Here is a simple way to decide. Read each statement and see how many feel true.
- "A formal service is not important to us."
- "We would rather spend money on a gathering we design ourselves."
- "Our faith allows cremation."
- "We do not need a viewing."
- "Saving one to several thousand is important right now."
If most feel true, a direct cremation may suit you well. If one or two feel strongly false, consider a simple attended cremation instead. Our page on how much a funeral costs, line by line shows those prices.

How do you arrange a direct cremation?
If someone has just died, these are the usual steps.
- Call the provider. Many answer 24 hours a day. Say where the person is: at home, in a hospital or in a hospice.
- Ask for the price list and total. Get the full cost in writing before you agree. In the US, the Funeral Rule requires a written, itemised statement.
- Register the death and get the paperwork. The provider will tell you which forms it needs. In England and Wales, this is usually the green certificate from the registrar.
- Decide what happens to the ashes. Returned to you, scattered at the crematorium, or kept for later.
- Plan your own goodbye. A meal, a walk, a gathering at home, or a memorial service months later.
If money is tight in England or Wales, check the Funeral Expenses Payment before you sign (GOV.UK). It can help with cremation fees and up to £1,000 of other costs, if you get certain benefits.

Should you prepay for a direct cremation?
Many providers sell direct cremation plans in advance. In the UK, these are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. A plan fixes the price, but your money is tied up, and terms differ. We compare UK plans in UK funeral plans compared. For the US, read are prepaid funeral plans worth it? first.
What is one thing you can do today?
If direct cremation feels right for you, say so now. Write it down: "I would like a direct cremation, with a small gathering later." Add where you would like the ashes to go. Then tell the person most likely to arrange your funeral.
This takes five minutes. It can save your family days of doubt, and often thousands in cost. Want a page for it? The Library's Funeral & Memorial Planning worksheet has space for these choices. It also has a cost table for quotes.

- A direct cremation usually includes collecting the body, care until the cremation, the paperwork, a simple coffin or container, the cremation itself and the return of the ashes. There is no service at the crematorium and no viewing. Some providers charge extra for collection from a home, out-of-hours collection, a larger coffin or hand delivery of the ashes.
- Can family attend a direct cremation?
- A direct cremation is normally unattended. Some UK providers sell a short attended option. Pure Cremation, for example, listed prices from £395 for a small room at its own crematoria on 2 November 2026. Many families hold their own memorial later instead. SunLife found that 86% of families who chose direct cremation held a gathering, wake or memorial before or after.
- Do you need a casket for a direct cremation?
- No. In the US, no state or local law requires a casket for cremation. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, a funeral home that offers direct cremation must offer an unfinished wood box or alternative container, such as pressboard, cardboard or canvas, and must tell you in writing that you can use one.
- Is direct cremation the same as a cheap funeral?
- It is the lowest-cost option, but it does not have to mean less care or less meaning. The saving comes from leaving out the service at the crematorium, the hearse and limousines, embalming and viewing. Families can then hold a personal memorial at a time and place that suits them, often at home or outdoors.
