How Much Does a Funeral Cost in 2026? Real Prices, Line by Line

A funeral in the US costs about $6,280 to $8,300 at the median, before cemetery costs. That is the National Funeral Directors Association's figure for a funeral with a viewing, followed by cremation or burial (NFDA). In the UK, a simple attended funeral costs £3,828 on average, and £5,140 with the usual extras (SunLife, 2026). The cheapest option, a direct cremation, costs about $1,995 in the US and £1,628 in the UK.
Those are the headline numbers. But nobody pays a "median". You pay a bill with ten or twenty lines on it. This page walks through those lines, country by country, so you can see where the money goes and where you have a choice. All prices were checked on 2 November 2026.
How much does a funeral cost in 2026?
Here are the most recent figures from named price studies. Each covers the funeral itself. Cemetery costs, like a grave plot and a headstone, are mostly extra.
| Country | Direct cremation (no service) | Cremation with a service | Burial with a service |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $1,995 median (Asurgo, 2026) | $6,280 median, with viewing (NFDA, 2023) | $8,300 median, with viewing (NFDA, 2023) |
| United Kingdom | £1,628 average (SunLife, 2026) | £3,518 (simple attended) | £4,758 (simple attended) |
| Canada | $700 to $2,500 (Canadian Funerals Online, 2026) | $3,500 to $8,000 (traditional, same source) | $6,000 to $15,000+ (traditional, same source) |
| Australia | $3,648 median advertised price (FuneralsDirect, September 2026) | $8,045 estimated average (Australian Seniors, 2023) | $11,039 estimated average (Australian Seniors, 2023) |
A few honest notes on this table.
The US service figures are from 2023. They are still the latest national medians the NFDA publishes. Prices have risen since, so treat them as a floor, not a ceiling.
The Canadian figures are ranges from one funeral directory, not a government study. We found no national official survey for Canada.
The Australian service figures are estimates from a 2023 survey and mystery shopping (Australian Seniors, Cost of Death 2.0). The direct cremation figure is newer. It is the middle of 296 providers' published starting prices.
What do most people choose?
In the US, the NFDA projects a cremation rate of 63.4% for 2025, against 31.6% for burial (NFDA). In the UK, SunLife found that 53% of funerals were attended cremations, 26% were burials and 21% were direct cremations (SunLife, 2026).
So cremation is now the normal choice in both countries. That matters for cost, because burial adds land.
What is on a funeral bill, line by line?
A US funeral home must give you an itemised General Price List. The FTC Funeral Rule says so (FTC). Here is what the main lines cost, from more than 1,000 real price lists collected in 2026 (Asurgo).
| Line on the bill | US median, 2026 | Can you say no? |
|---|---|---|
| Basic services fee | $2,195 | No. Every home charges it. |
| Embalming | $775 | Usually yes. No state requires it for every death. |
| Basic casket (starting price) | $1,000 | Yes. You can buy one elsewhere, or rent one for a viewing before cremation. |
| Direct cremation, all in | $1,995 | This is the simple option itself. |
| Immediate burial, all in | $2,800 | This is the simple burial option. |
| Full traditional funeral, funeral home charges only | $6,415 | It is made of the lines above, plus viewing, hearse and staff. |
What is the basic services fee?
It is the fee for the funeral director's time and overheads. The FTC says it covers planning, permits, copies of death certificates, notices, sheltering the body and working with the cemetery or crematory (FTC). It is the only fee you cannot decline.
What are "cash advance" items?
These are things the funeral home buys from others for you. Examples are flowers, obituary notices, clergy fees and certified death certificates. Some homes add a markup. If they do, the Funeral Rule says they must tell you in writing (FTC).
What does the cemetery charge?
The cemetery bills separately from the funeral home. You may pay for:
- the grave plot;
- opening and closing the grave;
- a vault or grave liner, if the cemetery requires one;
- a headstone or marker, and its setting.
Asurgo estimates these add $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on where you live (Asurgo, 2026). No US state law requires a vault. Many cemeteries do, to stop the ground sinking (FTC).
Where you live changes the price
The same direct cremation had a median of $1,190 in Nevada and $3,315 in Rhode Island in the 2026 data (Asurgo). Prices also vary a lot between homes in the same town. So the most useful number is not a national average. It is the price list of the homes near you.

How much does a funeral cost in the UK?
SunLife has tracked UK funeral prices for 22 years. Its 2026 report shows 2025 prices (SunLife).
| Type of funeral | Average cost |
|---|---|
| Direct cremation | £1,628 |
| Direct burial (plus the plot, about £2,374) | £1,628 |
| Simple attended cremation | £3,518 |
| Simple attended burial | £4,758 |
| Traditional attended cremation | £4,200 |
| Traditional attended burial | £5,440 |
A "simple attended" funeral has the usual elements and a service people can go to. A "traditional" one adds extras, like a limousine and a mid-range coffin.
What do the extras cost?
These are the "send-off" costs on top of the funeral director's fees (SunLife report, PDF).
| Extra | Average cost |
|---|---|
| Memorial (headstone or plaque) | £1,044 |
| Catering | £564 |
| Limousine hire | £463 |
| Venue hire | £362 |
| Flowers | £242 |
| Order of service sheets | £128 |
| Funeral notice | £91 |
| Death notice | £81 |
If you chose every extra, they would add £2,976. Most people do not. Weighted by what people really pick, the average send-off spend is £1,312.
Which UK region is most expensive?
London is the most expensive at £4,897 for a simple attended funeral. Northern Ireland is the cheapest at £3,105. Burial plots vary even more, from about £886 in Northern Ireland to £4,863 in London (SunLife, 2026).
Since 2021, every UK funeral director must show a standard price list on its website and in its premises. A Competition and Markets Authority order requires it (CMA). So you can compare prices before you ever pick up the phone.
What does a funeral cost in Canada and Australia?
Canada
One national directory gives 2026 ranges. A direct cremation costs $700 to $2,500. A traditional funeral with burial costs $6,000 to $15,000 or more (Canadian Funerals Online). British Columbia and Ontario sit at the top of its provincial ranges. Quebec and the Atlantic provinces sit lower.
Australia
Australia has two useful sources. A September 2026 index of 296 providers found a median advertised direct cremation price of $3,648. The middle half of prices ran from $2,890 to $4,650 (FuneralsDirect).
For funerals with a service, the latest estimate is older. A 2023 survey put the average cremation at $8,045 and the average burial at $11,039 (Australian Seniors). The gaps between areas are large. A standard burial funeral averaged $20,310 in the ACT and $5,583 in regional New South Wales.
Who pays, and what help is there?
The person who signs the contract with the funeral home is usually responsible for the bill. They can often claim it back from the estate later. But banks may freeze accounts after a death, so families often pay first.
Government help exists, but it is small. These amounts were checked on 2 November 2026.
- US, Social Security: a one-time payment of $255 to a qualifying spouse or child (SSA).
- US, veterans: for an eligible veteran who died on or after 1 October 2026 and whose death was not service-connected, the VA pays up to $1,032 for burial and $1,032 for a plot. If the death was service-connected and happened on or after 11 September 2001, the maximum is $2,000 (VA).
- England and Wales: if you get certain benefits, a Funeral Expenses Payment can cover some burial or cremation fees, plus up to £1,000 for other costs like the funeral director (GOV.UK). Scotland has its own Funeral Support Payment.
- Canada: the CPP death benefit is $2,500, with a possible top-up of $2,500 for some deaths since 1 January 2025 (Government of Canada).
Even in the UK, the payment "will not usually cover all of the costs of the funeral," GOV.UK says. SunLife found that families who got it saw about 48% of their costs covered.
How can you keep the cost down?
You do not need to spend a lot to give someone a good farewell. The FTC puts it simply: "It's not necessary to have the fanciest casket or the most elaborate funeral to properly honor a loved one" (FTC).
Here are the steps that make the biggest difference.
- Get two or three price lists. In the US, homes must give prices by phone. In the UK, they must post them online. Our guide on funeral home price tricks shows what to watch for.
- Ask what you can decline. Only the basic services fee is fixed in the US. Embalming, a viewing, a hearse and limousines are choices.
- Think about direct cremation. It cuts the cost by thousands. Many families hold a memorial later, at home or in a park. Our page on direct cremation costs compares providers.
- Buy the casket or urn elsewhere, if cheaper. A US funeral home cannot refuse it or charge a handling fee.
- Compare cremation and burial honestly. Burial adds land, a grave fee and a headstone. Our cremation vs burial cost page sets them side by side.
- Ask about government help before you sign. Some payments depend on the contract you sign.
Why does the price shock so many families?
Most people meet these numbers in the worst week of their life. They have a few days to decide. And they often do not know what the person wanted.
In SunLife's 2026 survey, 53% of people who arranged a funeral did not know if their loved one wanted burial or cremation. That is up from 51% the year before (SunLife). When you do not know, it is natural to spend more, "just to be safe".
That is the real cost of not planning. It is not only money. It is guessing, under pressure, about someone you love.
What is one small step you can take today?
Death is part of every life. Preparing for it is a kindness to the people who stay behind. It does not need to be heavy.
Start with three choices. Burial or cremation? A service, or a simple goodbye later? Roughly how much should be spent? Write the answers down and tell one person where they are.

Common questions
- How much does an average funeral cost in the US in 2026?
- The National Funeral Directors Association's latest figures put the median US funeral with a viewing and burial at $8,300, and a funeral with a viewing and cremation at $6,280 (2023 prices, checked November 2026). Cemetery costs such as the plot and headstone are extra. A direct cremation, with no service, has a median of $1,995 across 919 price lists in a 2026 study by Asurgo.
- How much does a funeral cost in the UK?
- The SunLife Cost of Dying Report 2026 puts a simple attended funeral at £3,828 on average. A simple attended cremation costs £3,518 and a simple attended burial £4,758. A direct cremation costs £1,628. With extras such as flowers, a venue and food, the average total spend is £5,140. London is the most expensive region at £4,897 and Northern Ireland the cheapest at £3,105.
- What is the cheapest kind of funeral?
- A direct cremation is usually the cheapest legal option. There is no service before it, and the family can hold a memorial later. It has a US median of $1,995 (Asurgo, 2026) and a UK average of £1,628 (SunLife, 2026). In Australia, the median advertised starting price was $3,648 in September 2026 (FuneralsDirect).
- Who pays for a funeral if there is no money?
- Usually the person who arranges it signs the contract and pays, then claims back from the estate if there is money in it. Government help is small. In the US, Social Security pays a one-time $255 to a qualifying spouse or child. In England and Wales, people on certain benefits can claim a Funeral Expenses Payment, which includes up to £1,000 for funeral director fees and other costs. In Canada, the CPP death benefit is $2,500, with a possible $2,500 top-up.
- Do I have to buy a casket from the funeral home?
- No, not in the US. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, a funeral home must accept a casket or urn you bought elsewhere and cannot charge you a fee to handle it. For a direct cremation, it must also offer a simple 'alternative container', because no law requires a casket for cremation.
- Is embalming required by law?
- No US state requires routine embalming for every death, the FTC says. Some states require embalming or refrigeration if burial or cremation is delayed. Direct cremation and immediate burial need no embalming. Embalming had a median price of $775 on 871 US price lists in 2026 (Asurgo), so saying no can save real money.
